DI Translation Series: CART Interpreting

The main focus of this workshop addresses theoretical and practical application of providing interpretation from a CART (Communication Access Real Time) captioning source. Participants will explore unique challenges with providing interpretation from a CART source. This workshop will review Konkel’s (2016) groundbreaking study in A Comparative Analysis Between a Relayed Interpretation and Sight Translation by Deaf Interpreter Hands on activities will be provided to practice and synthesize information reviewed.

Presenters:

Darla Konkel, MA, CDI has worked professionally as a Deaf Interpreter for more than X years. She earned her Masters from Department of Interpretation and Translation at Gallaudet University in 2016. She also oversees  Gallaudet’s Deafblind Paraprofessional Program. She will be sharing her Masters’ thesis titled A Comparative Analysis Between a Relayed Interpretation and Sight Translation by a Deaf Interpreter.

Gino Gouby, CDI & CLIP-R, has worked professionally as a Deaf Interpreter for more than 15 years and has worked for Gallaudet University Interpreting Services (GIS) since 2008. In addition to interpreting, he oversees Gallaudet University’s After Hours Emergency Interpreting Services.

DI Translation Series: Multimedia Museum Tours

The main focus of this workshop addresses theoretical and practical application of providing translation for multimedia tour guides. Participants will explore unique challenges with design, process/production, and accessing resources in providing multimedia ASL-accessible tours. Participants will also have an opportunity to review and analyze existing publicly available ASL-accessible museum tours in addition synthesizing workshop information by creating an original ASL multimedia museum tour video for group discussion and analysis.

Presenter:

Gino Gouby, CDI & CLIP-R, has worked professionally as a Deaf Interpreter for more than 15 years and has worked for Gallaudet University Interpreting Services (GIS) since 2008. At GIS, in addition to interpreting, he is also the GIS interim manager at Gallaudet. Before working at GIS, he has worked over five years as the Professional Development Manager within the VRS field. He has presented and interpreted on local, regional, national and international level. He received his Certified Deaf Interpreter certification in 2001 and his Specialist Certificate: Legal in 2016.
